blog exercise #9

As we watched “outsourced the movie“, it shows that people in all over the world are suffering from prejudice. It all started from the modern downtown office to an old Indian station.

In the beginning when Todd arrived he hated and didn’t want to accept and adapt to the Indian culture so he had a lot of troubles, However as the days passed he started to befriend with Indians.

At that time he started to notice Aisha the smart, young and beautiful girl that helped with the work. Abruptly, the movie turns up and down with all the dramatic changes and they finally fell in love. Ultimately, Todd discovered that what made him sad in the beginning was one of the best things that ever happened to him which is being outsourced.

The example from the movie of hofstede's power distance ( high v low ) and individualism v collectivism, In the US the boss had his own office and was far and distanced from the employees however in India there boss worked with them in the same place and he was just like the rest of the employees .

In my opinion, outsourced was not only a romantic/comedy movie but a movie that gave us an understanding to the world economy and what we should do to stop this discrimination in the world.

Reflection - answer 10 of the next 30 questions - and POST TODAY 6 May!!
Create a reflection about the movie Outsourced using the PowerPoint I give you. Show that you really understand the above cultural concepts.

1. As soon as Todd arrives, he experiences the discomfort of being disoriented in a
strange new place. What happens at the airport?

He struggled trying to walk through the huge crowed at the airport, which was an abnormal scene for him. Then he got annoyed by all the taxi drivers around him, who were fighting over him

2. When a friendly traveler helps him get on the train, what does he tell him to do?
How could this advice apply to what an exchange student has to do?

He advised him to jump into the train

3. When he gets on the train, he cannot find an empty seat. How is this problem
solved for him? How might this be a cultural solution?

The young kid offered him his seat and then sat in his lap, because of the high population in india people are used to such a solution such as sharing seats, standing and squeezing in the train cabins.

4. As any exchange student, he has a lot of experiences trying new food. His first
encounter is with an iced drink. What happens?

He got stomach ache, and got sick because of the polluted water used in the iced drink

5. First encounters with a culture can be shocking – Todd sees crowded streets with
cows, noise, and a man urinating in the street. But how does his host describe the
city?
“Bombay is terrible, but here it’s very clean”

6. Even though the host Puro speaks English, Todd uses American slang a lot
without thinking. So as not to insult Puro, what does he say the meaning of
Schmuck is?

“That means like a nice guy”

7. Todd wants to check in to a hotel But Puro insists he come to a boarding house.
What is the reason he gives Todd?

That he will feel lonely if he stays by himself in the hotel.

8. As soon as they meet, Aunti Ji starts asking very intimate questions that
Americans who have just met would never ask. What kind of things does she ask?
What does your father do, are you married, what’s your salary, do you have a girlfriend? Why did you break up?

9. During his first conversation with Aunti Ji he makes two big mistakes. What are
they?

He ate with his left hand which considered not clean in india and he placed the same hand he ate with back in the food

10. The Golden Rule says do unto others as you would have them do unto you. That
means his Indian hosts and friends are trying to make him comfortable the way
they would be comfortable. How does this apply when the servant is preparing
tea for Todd?

She poured the tea for him and even put sugar just the way they do.

Cultural Diversity project

I learnt alot in the process of making the video about my culture while visiting the culture village and seeing how our grandparents lived it was amazing yet hard because there was no electricity, no cars it was a tough life yet they made it through . I honestly don't think i can last 1 week living their life !
And i learnt alot about other cultures by making interviews with people from all over the world who came to visit the UAE learn about it's culture . People where amazed by the UAE culture just like i was when they  told me about things unique in their culture . Overall it was an amazing experience that made me realize that there is alot about our past than what we know and i hope to experience something similar in the next years and i'm sure this is an experience i would gladly repeat ten times if necessary .

Culture and Personality in Anthropology

Read the section about Culture and Personality in Anthropology. Answer these questions about that section:-

1.       Define “Anthropology” in your own words:  The studies of culture and human history .

2.       Define “movement” in this context: The migration of people.

3.       What do you understand by “socialization of children” Give an example:  This is where your culture tells you how you raise your children.

4.       Read this sentence again and give examples of childrearing in different societies and cultures: “socialization creates personality patterns. It helps shape people’s emotions, thoughts, behaviors, cultural values and norms to fit into and function as productive members in the surrounding human society. The study of culture and personality demonstrates that different socialization practices such as childrearing in different societies (cultures) result in different personality types.”

- We teach the child how to respect old people.

- We teach our children hospitality.

- We teach them the importance of pride and honor.

Consider “bed time” in different cultures; Some Emirati families do not have a set bed time for the children.  In most Western cultures, children often do have a specific bed time.

5.       Read this sentence again and say to what extent you agree: “all humans are the same when born, but childrearing in different societies causes deviations in behavior and personalities from each other.”

I I agree fully with this, all children are born the same and it’s up to the parent and society to change them and may also affect the power of the person and the culture of personal.
